TOPIC: 1987 944 cylinder head torque specs

Re:1987 944 cylinder head torque specs 15 years, 1 month ago #3843

From an engineer's perspective torque numbers are never exact. For as much effort gets put into them they are really a range anyway. The idea behind torque spec is to just get enough load on the bolt assembly. Too much can break stuff and too little will let it get lose.

BTW.... I honestly can't remember what I torqued to now. I am thinging I did the 66 ftlbs on the head and used the 90 stuff on the griddle. Ahh I can't remember and frankly I never do so I just look it up every time I do it.

interestly the 90 90 angle comes out pretty much the torque spec numbers are. This make sense.

thanks for everyones help and input.
i measured the nuts to be sure, and they were not the 12 mm high ones, so i went with the 15, 37, 66 lb sequence.

I do appreciate all the input, and the reminder to wait the 15 minutes between tightening the nuts.
thanks again,
josh

Josh,

We found the three step process got us to 120 ft*lbs on our stock 83 motor. We replaced the studs and the three step process got us into the 60s.

In general, we've found that the finer the threads the less torque you will need for the same size bolt or stud diameter.
