944 Spec Midwest opened its season to cold, wind, rain, and a little snow, but persevered to have a great event nonetheless! New comp school graduates, close racing, and decimated track records were all on tap. The weekend started early with Ken Frey and Anita Loeb successfully completing comp school with the support of Bennington Motorsports, who brought four cars to this event, including the rental "Green Machine" for Loeb to pilot.

California's wet winter has kept most of us Nor cal 944 racers away from the track for the  first two races of the season, but with great weather in the forecast, five drivers left  their raincoats at home and brought out their racecars to Thunderhill this past weekend for  some action and to shake off the rust from the long offseason.

We had our fist Texas race weekend of 2011 on Jan 29/30th, a new high water mark for Texas 944-Spec racing with 5 starters on Sunday!!!  Kevin Webb was there with his absolutely spotless blue/white car. All of the tech inspectors commented on how clean and neat everything was. This is no small complement given Tech was failing somewhere around 30% of cars on their first pass! Todd Covini and myself were there with out new-to us cars ready to shake them down for the first time.  BJ Meyer made a heroic effort to get his car together and arrived around 11pm Saturday night. The last car was the borrowed pink/green Colorado car, into which we put Texas Race Director Clifton Winkleman.

Team Help Dubai (formerly Team Baconator) has a good history of high finishes in LeMons races.  They were looking for a driver for the "Arse-Freeze-Apalooza" at Buttonwillow, so I signed up.  The car is a 1986 Porsche 944 running wheel spacers and late offset 16x8s with 225-50-16s.  LeMons requires 200 or higher tread wear tires, so we were on Direzza Sport Z1 Star Spec.  The car has been modified to resemble a Bugatti Veyron through the creative use of a toilet seat, foam, and lots of foil tape.  "Increasing the cost of oil one lap at a time" is the team motto on the side of the car.  LeMons cars are limited to a value of $500--excluding wheels and tires and safety equipment--so everything else on the car is original, except maybe the shocks.  Our competitive advantage was going to be the late 21-gallon fuel tank.
