TOPIC: RR Tire Wear $$$

RR Tire Wear $$$ 11 years ago #15634

I corded 3 RRs on the 10th heat cycle running at Chuckwalla (cement track). I am running 3 1/2 neg front and 2 1/2 neg rear. The current set of RRs have 6 cycles from Autoclub and 6 more from Buttonwillow and look like they will be toast with 6 more. Although the RRs are faster, this is not the way to keep costs down and bring more racers into 944 Spec.

The good old RA-1s were good for 24 cycles up. After Nationals we should consider voting to see if the group wants to go back to RA-1s for 2014.

Though I love the new tire and the corner speed it has longevity needs to be a major factor.
I am now at 10 heat cycles on one of my sets and it slowed a little bit but not much. My wear looks fine and I am at 4 and 3 on camber. This is most likely due to running softer springs than the allowable maximum.
I was typically getting 15-20 heat cycles from RA1s. Some tracks do seem to wear them faster.

Racers,
Could you check and see what DOT code is stamped on the sidewall?

I am on my 3rd set of RR's.
I am currently running -3.5 Front and -2.5 rear which worked fine with RA1's.

First set of RR's all corded on the outside edge. One showed some of the tread separation, even though it was mounted in the proper direction. Tracks were Steets of Willow and two times at Chuckwalla (CW) (It is very smooth asphalt Jim). Tires had 12 or 13 heat cycles. Dates were weeks 31 and 32. Adhesion had fallen off somewhat, but if not corded could have been used a few more cycles.

Second set of RR's - Three corded on outside edge. BOTH rears showed severe tread separation and have been sent back to Toyo for eval. These had around 11-12 heat cycles from Chuckwalla and California Speedway (Auto Club). These were "flipped" after Chuckwalla due to outside edge wear. All mounted properly. Dates were week 31. They had lost some adhesion, but were still usable.

Third set is newer. Some wear on the outside. A little loss of stick after 8 heat cycles. No separation.

Love the Stick! Hate the shorter life! Hate the inability to rotate as needed and need to mount in specific direction!

Keep the information coming guys. We are just getting started here out in the MW. I have 6 heat cycles from my trip to the SE, and wear looks pretty minimal, but we ran a lot of laps under yellow, I did get some seam separation on my outside rear. I am going to try running that one in front to see if the helps - it only sees forces one direction there. Has anyone done tire carcass temp testing on these yet with a probe pyrometer? That may help tell the story on if these tires need more camber than the RA-1's on our cars.

There are some week 50 build tires out there - lets keep an eye on how those do as well. My current two sets (one not yet used) are week 31 builds.

I have 3 sets and one set is unused. One set has 10 cycles and one set has 6. I believe that all my tires are week 32 but I will confirm that today. i have lots of tire temp data to share.
I have not had any separations or cording, wear looks even across the tire.
