TOPIC: Spec944 Year Choice?

Spec944 Year Choice? 10 years ago #17626

Hi Gents/Ladies

New to Spec944 forum.. Sorry, but have been "air-cooled" driver for many years.. GTS3/TTC 911 Carrera and SC in the barn.. Thinking of adding Spec944 to the stable .

For the limited years 83-88? 2.5L naturally aspirated , is there a better year choice of car to seek out? IF you had to do it over? A year that had just something else over another year car?

I will be building from scratch, and doing my own thing... Appreciate the feedback!

I think all years are good, except for the 87/88 has different offsets, but guys would chose the 88's for the motor. I like the 86 or 85.5 because you can use either the alum or steel arms, so that allows some options. You can also remove the tire well which makes it very easy to get to your trans-axle. I never liked the early dash in the 83-85. Except for a few exceptions, parts are interchangeable between the years.

The good thing about 944 spec is that it is really a personal preference as the differences are very minor.

thank you... Any year then can be upgraded to like Elephant Racing suspensions, for example? So no "major" changes between years in suspension.. A-arms, Spring plates ect... Much like the 77-89 911s ??

I would choose an 88 sunroof delete 924S.
In the 944's, I prefer the 85.5 and 86 models. They have many late systems but still can use cookie cutter wheels. The front suspension can be back dated to steel arms. They have the 42mm rear bearings and alum arms, but not the ABS offset.
The 88 engine/computer makes it simpler to get to the max allowed HP, but the early cars can be shaved and keyed to match that power.
Please read the rules thoroughly BEFORE starting so you understand the philosophy of the class. Cheap, equal cars.
Good luck!

The "philosophy" of cheap AND equal attracts me the most!! My 3.2L 911 running in GTS3 against front engine RWD M3s, 350Zs, ect tends to be a bit of a mismatch..

Whilst my stock 3.2 puts out 219 at the wheels/weighs 2350 dry...I'm still at the bottom hp/wt in that class... Not to mention..how pretty my 911 is and the $$$$ I have into her.. Walls and bumping is expensive...!

The intention is to return her to the street as a pretty "radical" street car and do my fender rubbing in something less costly... e.g. the Spec944

Been around 911s for years, and in essence don't see major differences in 944s suspensions/basic mechanicals... much is similar.
thank you.

Excellent.
No fending rubbing at all though, please.
Also, our class is called 944 Spec.
Spec 944 is the SCCA version of the class.
