This past weekend at the Midwestern Council event at Blackhawk Farms we had rain for practice, wet track for qualifying and dry track for the races. My Stig (hired driver) dissed my rain tires (3/4 worn street tires) as being worse in the wet then the slicks!

I'd like to hear recommendations for full rain tires so I have some on hand for next year.

How deep do you shave your tires? A set of RA1s with a 5/32nds shave and a heat cycle are perfect rains...and they can be cycled into use so they dont end up being five years old.

as 944-spec the best bet i think is full tred ra1's (only tire we can run)

if i could have any i think the toyo T1R is pretty awesome in the rain.

I ran in downpour on fresh 4/32 shaved RA-1's this past year. Tires worked great and I out qualified everyone except for Mini on hoosier rains. That included classes from Vipers in ST to the entire 944 spec field. Rain was about as bad as possible with a 10 foot wide river across the track in one spot. I would hit puddle and hyrdoplane off till I touched the curb. That kept me on track. Of course no tire worked well there.

Then in wet in to drying track I started 2nd overall maintained position except for the viper on proper racing rain tires (goodyear rains) passed me. So those tires worked great in hard rain and intermediate conditions.

Grassroots motorsports just did an article on rain tires. Check that out, I don't remember what was the best one.
