I'm new to 944 Spec, I've been autocrossing my 944 for the last 3 years with my Son and now we are thinking about stepping it up. Over the last 3 years we have slowly changed the 944 to the Spec rules. All I need is a Engine Builder.

I Search "engine builder" and the only topic that came up was Great NEWS! about 944-spec's LARGEST REGION" Not a good topic to read when you're a new guy wanting to get in to 944 Spec. But I've been racing in Sports 2000 (spec class) in SCCA for a long time. Heard all that before.

With that said does anyone know a really really good 944-Spec Engine Builder?

We are looking forward to racing it at Mid-Ohio (home track)

Anyway, welcome!

I recommend Bennington Motorsports in Lafayette, IN - the link is on the left.
He will be cheaper then Lindsey, and will actually build you a legal motor. Bennington's been very good to the Series, and has a lot of experince with 944's.

What are your plans for next year?

You could spend a lot or a little.

But you want to be sure who ever does the engine has good knowledge of the Porsche design. It is easy to get the valve job wrong. Ask me how I know.

If you have a good block without scoring that still has it's original pistons, rods and crank then any engine builder can do the rings and bearings. Do not hone the block!! Just put in rings and maybe touch the cylinders with a scotch Brite pad.

The head should be done by someone who has knowledge of the design.

Another builder and series sponsor is Autopoint Motors here in NorCal. The guys here can't say enough great things about Art and crew. His prices are very reasonable as well. Most of the engines in NorCal were built by Art.

As far as Lindsey, they are a first rate shop and good guys as well. You really can't go wrong with any of the three listed but supporting those who support the series is always a good thing when possible.

Or you can do it yourself. Building one of these motors is very simple. All you do is tear it down and rebuild with new seals, bearings after you clean it. Head is only thing that needs any outside work. The rest is all littely by the factory book. You can probably save $1500-2000 doing it at home. If you are handy at mechanical things I suggest doing this. If you really have no ability you can get a shop do it. No special build tricks at all.
