TOPIC: Which 944 transaxles are class legal?

Re: Which 944 transaxles are class legal? 8 years ago #21404

I note that the rule says that the differentials are "free". Does that mean that if we choose to we could use an aftermarket limited slip differential? Probably more expensive than an OEM one I realize just thinking out loud as it were.

Yes you can use any limited slip. If you don't already have the short 5th gear you will want that too.

Multiple national championships were won with a product called Phantom Grip. It is an add on you can install on an open diff. Not as good as a full LSD but it won a lot of races.

Lots of parts are still available to rebuild the stock LSD. These are actually a trans used in Audis.

For those who are running the Phantom Grip, anyone experiencing damage, either to the PG, spider gears, or transx? How much metal are you finding in your fluid?

I have been saving up for a guards or os giken LSD, but had considered a PG insert at one point.

I raced the #999 car with the PG for 3 years with no issues. It was in the car when I bought it and I believe Tyler Palmer raced that car an additional 3 years with the PG.

Not as good as the Guards but good enough for 3 National Championships.

Thanks for reminding me about the name of Phantom Grip! I remember seeing it on here a couple years ago but couldn't remember when I was searching for LSD options the other day for a new car I am building.

Tuning of the LSD arguably has the most impact on the performance of the car. There's a reason other classes limit the LSD in breakaway torque and type.
