Hello Racers!

I just picked up an '87 924S to build up for 944 NorCal competition. The 924S comes with 6x15 wheels and I need to purchase 7x15 wheels, so I'm looking at options.

Since the 924S has a narrow track compared to the 944 would it be legal to use the early offset cookie cutter wheels to increase the track width of the 924S closer to that of a 944? Or should I just stick with phone dials? If it is legal, is there any downside to doing so?

Thanks!

It's legal, but it's a very tight fit, even with a lot of negative camber, and rolled fenders. I'm not sure the new R-888 would fit at all if it's carcass & profile are any different. I'd definitely borrow some wheels to test fit before diving in on this one.

Chris was working on this issue (#2 nasarm). lets see if he will chime in here or tell us where he is at. I have 2 924S's so far i think the aero and track width seem to equal out...

If you want, I can bring a couple of my wheels with RA-1's to Hank's next weekend and we can do a test fit. It should be close enough to the R888's...

Well here is how it works out.

The rules allow a track width that is stock 944 track front and rear. If you use cookie cutters you will b equal to this max allow track width. So from that respect you are legal.

HOWEVER.... The 924S has narrow fenders and the wider track will not fit in the stock fender line. We allow the 924S to roll the inside of the fenders, but you cannot change the outer fender profile (ie you can't flare it at all). You must allow have the tire inside the bodywork. What this means is that they won't fit in practice. What all 924S guys do is to run the late offset 15x7 phone dial wheels. They fit fine and on the road the difference in track width does not impact overall performance.
