Well, my 269k mile Beauty took a crap in Pueblo and I'm looking for a replacement Engine. Any deals you guys know of? The plan is to get another one, slap it in, replace rod bearings and try to rebuild the old one for a spare.

I found mine at a scrapyard in ABQ for $300 (discount auto parts, VW mostly(505) 877-6782). The oil drain plug was clean as a whistle, and when I got it home I performed a "white trash ring test" (filled the cylinders up with light weight oil, let it sit for 36 hours) I got lucky in that the rings were good, and the head was rebuildable.

I would recommend scouring the junkyards, and be patient until you find the right one to go with. The magnet in the drain plug will tell you a lot. Mine was a top-end only fuel injector fire damaged motor, which somebody gave up on.

The other approach I almost went with, was a running parts car, because that approach can be very economical. A really ugly runner can be found for $5-800.

What gave out on yours ? Good luck !

CJ,

Just did a quick search on www.car-parts.com and here's what I found:

Two 1986 engines at Best Foreign Auto Parts, Inc. USA-CO(Colorado-Springs) 1-800-624-7364, call for price.

1983 for $650 Adopt A Part USA-CO(Denver) 1-800-508-2211

Nothing else local, but engines from $350+shipping around the country.

Excellent! Nothing's better than getting a broken car back on track!
Hopefully everyone can pull together and still get you out for Gateway - it's going to be a blast!
