TOPIC: Glass or Lexan or nothing,

Glass or Lexan or nothing, 13 years, 9 months ago #7858

I'm working on a 924S that will eventually make it to Spec.

What are the restrictions on replacing glass with lexan
and/or running without glass at all.

I've got a side vent helmet, would be nice to vent air from the rear qtr window with a lexan/scoop setup.

thanks,

Mike

Welcome!

Congrats on building your car & being a pioneer in Texas!

Building the car , you'll need to get very familiar with all the rules:
http://www.nasaproracing.com/rules/944_spec_rules.pdf

Here's the part you're looking for:

16.3.8 Lexan may be used for windshields when conforming to NASA CCR 15.13 and may be substituted for window glass in the doors only.

No running w/o a windshield.

Thank you,

I've read the doc about 20 times now
Then I forget that there is an updated one
and then I get confused -- and at the shop
scanning multiple copies of that obscure
line I remember reading == but can't remember which class.
Oh well.

In particular I was referring to the the side windows behind the doors. Would make a good spot to divert air to my helmet.

thx,

Mike

Rules tell you what is allowed. Rules say you can run lexan in windshield and door glass. Rules do not say you can replace any other glass with lexan. So you must keep it stock glass. You can use the door windows for fresh air. Some guys use the passenger door to run air duct across the car to helmet.
