The series is still growing, so there is a good market for these cars, especially when they a proven, and well turned out. $8K buy a good car, and the best can push $10K. $6K cars usually aren't fully developed, or need some cosmetic work.

Keep looking there are a few more FS out there!

With your racing history, you could liekly proceed directly to comp school - talk to your NASA regional director.

From looking at the NASA website as it pertains to licensing it reads as if I should be able to just apply, prove my experience, pay the fees and its issued. That would be great! Could actually be out (assuming I find a car) and at the tracks I'd like to hit and not miss the season.
